“Technically, true white noise is generated only electronically,” explains Kelsey Allan, a sleep expert with Sleep Train. “But ambient noises like fans, distant cicadas, or gentle rain can produce a similar effect.”

The result was clear. Increased sleep spindles correlated with increased NREM sleep, or deep sleep.

The conclusion? Effective modulation of sleep spindles could potentially cure sleep issues.

It’s promising. But it’s also early. Human application requires far more research.

The Temperature Factor

There is another reason to love the fan. It’s not just about sound. It’s about heat.

Your body temperature drops by 1 to 2 degrees at night. The average normal temperature is actually closer to 97.8 degrees Fahrenheit (36.5 Celsius), not the textbook 98.6.

If your body struggles to lower its temperature, sleep quality suffers.

“Your normal body temperature… drops by 1-2 degrees at night,” says Kevin Gaffney, M.D., neurologist and sleep medical director at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center. “If you have to struggle to lower your body temperature, this can decrease your sleep quality.”

A fan aids this process. It cools you down. It masks noise. It solves two biological problems with one plastic box.
